Everyone knows about “the comfort zone” and how you should push over your fears and conquer that tiny line that apparently holds the answer to the greatness of life. But they never really tell you about the other side of the coin.

We generally stay in our comfort zone 90% of the time. And it’s great, who doesn’t like to be comfortable? We take a few risks every now and then, feel great about it if they go well and then revert to our cushy life. Why? It’s easy to be comfortable.
And we should be afraid of that.
Because being comfortable means we don’t strive for more. Why push ourselves if we feel we’re in a good place? Let’s take this scenario: you know that thing you always wanted to do? Get in shape, start a cat-sitting business, hell, any dream you’ve ever had. And then you don’t do it. Why?
Because being in a comfortable environment doesn’t put us in the right mind set. If I’m not in a challenging situation, my brain isn’t in “problem solving” mode, it’s in “meh, whatever” or even “it won’t ever happen anyway” mode. Negativity comes from not having achieved something. And achieving means doing something. But we never do anything because we’re being negative about it. See this vicious circle?
I self sabotage myself all the time. Why? Because I’m comfortable. I want “greatness”, but I’m also scared of it. What if I get it, what then? It may sound stupid, but we’re more afraid of leaving our comfort zone than entering our discomfort zone.
It takes one action to get into our discomfort zone and then we always revert back. But for that short time, our brain rewires itself to deal with life in a different way. We see more possibilities, more options, more solutions.
That’s why I think we should be afraid of comfort. It’s slowly killing our dreams. One comfortable moment at a time.
